Lost and alone in freezing temperatures, a woman trudged through hip-deep snow during a South Dakota blizzard. On the verge of hypothermia, the missing woman needed to be located and rescued quickly. The Blunt Rural Fire Department quickly launched a search and rescue operation as soon as they were dispatched.

The response required all hands on deck. As a result, seven to eight squad members responded to the scene using their personal vehicles. Because they used their personal vehicles, the responders weren’t equipped with traditional radios. Without access to traditional radios, the team had no way of communicating with one another. In order to successfully execute this search and rescue effort, the responders needed a way to communicate with one another quickly. 

With these exact situations in mind, the Blunt Rural Fire Department had recently invested in Tango Tango – a secure mobile push-to-talk app that securely integrates traditional radio systems with smartphones. Despite not having radios on hand, the responders were able to use Tango Tango to communicate on-site. Responders were able to locate the lost woman quickly,  successfully saving her life before hypothermia set in.
