Position Description

You’ll help take an embedded Linux product from development through testing and production. Responsibilities will be matched to your experience and expand with guidance from teammates; you do not need prior experience in every area below.

  • Embedded Systems: Develop and maintain software using Rust, C++, and other tools. Build and troubleshoot Linux firmware, including kernel configuration and builds.
  • Electronics and Hardware Integration: Use schematics and technical documentation to troubleshoot device interfaces and cabling. As your skills develop, contribute to printed circuit board (PCB) design changes and coordinate with manufacturers.
  • Enclosures and 3D Printing: Help design and refine enclosures, prepare 3D prints, and improve the printing process.
  • Testing and Production: Improve device testing, provisioning, quality control, and inventory tools and processes. Help troubleshoot production issues and assist with manufacturing changes and compliance testing.
  • Customer Focus: Collaborate with teammates to understand customer needs, investigate problems, and develop reliable solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in design and code reviews, improve test coverage and automation, and refine engineering and manufacturing workflows to improve product quality.
  • Broader Contributions: Opportunities may include work on supporting applications and our Elixir backend, depending on your interests and project needs. Prior backend experience is not required.

Useful Skills

We look for solid engineering and programming fundamentals, whether developed through coursework, personal projects, internships, or professional work. The specialized skills below are optional, not a checklist: experience in any of them is valuable, and we’ll help you learn the others as needed.

  • Embedded Software: Familiarity with Rust, C/C++, Linux, or embedded-device development.
  • Networks: Familiarity with IP networking, routing, NAT, firewalls, and network troubleshooting.
  • Radio Systems: Familiarity with land mobile radio (LMR), analog and digital radio systems, or amateur radio. An amateur radio (HAM) license is a plus.
  • Development Tools: Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and AI-assisted development.
  • Hardware and Manufacturing: Familiarity with PCB design and manufacturing, from schematics and board layout through preparing fabrication files and coordinating with manufacturers.
  • 3D Printing: Experience with 3D modeling, slicing, or operating and maintaining a print farm for enclosure production.
  • Compliance: Familiarity with processes such as FCC Part 15, PTCRB, or carrier certification.
  • Backend Development: Experience with backend services, internal applications, or Elixir.

Desired Attributes

  • Intellectual Curiosity: A passion for learning new technologies and solving complex problems.
  • Hardware Curiosity: An interest in how physical devices work, with basic ability to follow a schematic and identify relevant components and connections, with guidance as needed. Circuit-design expertise is not expected.
  • Customer Orientation: A strong focus on understanding and meeting customer needs.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work effectively in a team, sharing knowledge, asking questions, and supporting peers.
  • Versatility: Interest in understanding the whole product and learning across software, electronics, mechanical design, and manufacturing.
