Layers - Create New Layer

Creating a Layer

Layers let you show hydrant locations, station locations, or any other points of interest on the Tango Tango map. Your layers appear in the smartphone app and in Live Map at manage.tangotango.io.

This guide covers creating a brand-new layer. If you already have a layer and just need to add individual locations (Layer Features), see the Add Layer Feature guide.

Have a lot of locations to add?

If you already have a file with all your hydrant locations (such as a Shapefile or CSV), follow our Bulk Import guide or email support@tangotango.net and we'll help you with the upload.

Creating a layer manually

  1. Go to manage.tangotango.io and log in.
  2. Click Map, then Layers.
  3. Click Add Layer near the top of the page.
  4. Enter your layer settings (described below).
  5. Click Save.

Once saved, your layer is ready for you to add Features. See the Add Layer Feature guide for next steps.

Layer settings

  • Name: what your team will see in the Map Layers menu (e.g., "Fire Hydrants").
  • Icon and Color: how each point in the layer appears on the map.
  • Layer Order: controls stacking when multiple layers overlap. Layers with a higher Layer Order appear on top.
  • Min Zoom and Max Zoom: the range of zoom levels at which the layer is visible. Higher numbers are more zoomed in. Leave both blank and the layer shows at every zoom level.
    • Tip: Zoom level 9 is roughly citywide, 5 is roughly statewide, 2 is roughly nationwide
  • Current Zoom: not a setting. It shows the zoom level of the map preview on the right, so you can see how your layer looks at each level.

Recommended zoom settings

Set Min Zoom to 10 and leave Max Zoom blank. This is a good default for dense layers like hydrants, which would otherwise cover the map when zoomed out. Adjust as needed.
